Aren't 1 and 2 part of the definition of the word duty meaning the same thing?

Top Comment: I could be mistaken, but I think the distinction is something like this: Putting out fires is a duty of a firefighter. Duty requires that I put out fires. Notice that in #1, the duty is a particular thing (putting out fires). That’s what the word refers to. In #2, duty simply means the obligation. It’s used slightly differently. I think that’s what’s going on here. But you’re right, these are very, very similar if not identical.
